You’ll probably want to skewer me for stereotyping the French but I live in Paris half the year and people here do lean towards the grumpy side of the spectrum. It’s not like you hear “have a ncie day” all the time, people don’t smile as much as us Americans, they just tend to snear in your general direction. But maybe what comes across as arrogance is this country’s actual ethos, it’s tacit set of societal rules, whereby it is considered good and just to express permanent discontent with the World. According to Claudia Senik, of the Paris School of Economics, author of «the french unhappiness puzzle», negativity is actually taught in schools, albeit indirectly. Critical thinking, or “pensée critique” for which the French are globally renowned, is THE lifeblood and backbone of the education system, and it is driven into all of France’s young citizens until it becomes workaday reflexive behavior, so as grown-ups, the french tend to be critical of anything and everything, all of the time. There’s even an academic term for it: “Rhetorical pessimism”. I’m suspecting it works as an addictive and contagious reward system, “à la Pavlov”, an oddball feedback loop wherein millions of people, convinced that they must challenge every item or idea in their cultural or political landscape, can only be happy… if they are UNhappy. So be it. In America we suffer from perverse optimism. Everything’s «Awesome». All the time. If you ask me, critical thinking and optimism are both healthy, but when left unchecked, they both suck. Quick.... Let’s invent a new country! In the meantime “Paris is for Love” is my little homage to the City of Light, that dark place where you are encouraged to wallow freely in your own negativity and where, according to my friend Anna, even the subway announcements are in a minor key. I kid you not.
