Quoting Alice Walker, “Activism is my rent for living on the Planet.” Paraphrasing Paul Hawken, we are the largest movement in Human history. One day during the Occupy Wall Street movement, I saw a young woman with pony tails facing traffic and wearing a large sign that read : “Sorry for the inconvenience, we’re trying to change the world”, at which point my head told my body to go pick up a guitar and write this song... immediately. In addition to being my own personal hymn for the movement, and about progressive humanism in general, and the ongoing struggle for democracy and against power systems throughout, this tune works as a very personal homage to NYC, where I had the great fortune to live and work for 5 years as an educator and activist, and meet and learn from great revolutionary minds. A nod here to pals David Marshall, Andy Bernick, Alan Messer, Terry Tempest Williams, Peter Warny, Brandon Ballengée, Laura Hoffman, Reverend Billy, Terry Clark, Guy Tudor, John Waldman, Don Riepe, Mike Fellar, German Perez... Many of the aforementioned people are not native new yorkers. They came from distant lands, or their ancestors did. Migration defines us, as a species. We are always on the move. One human family.
lyrics
They say we missed the last star standing
They say we missed our curtain call
They say I missed the morning siren
The giant billboard that said it all
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to change the world
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to turn it all
around
They say we missed the exit forward
Not to mention the exit home
I guess we’re stuck until the border
Look for the sign that says it all
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to rule the world
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to take it all
away
Climbing, climbing, climbing upward
Jump the river boys and girls
Treading sand in heavy desert
Cross the ocean walk the earth
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to change the world
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to make it all the way
Submit to the king submit to a throne
Dine with the Queen go fetch a bone
Land on a mine, die for a cause
Submit your love hand in your life
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to rule the world
Sorry for the inconvenience
We’re just trying to take it all away
Take it all Away
Take it all THE way
Freeway...
Take it down that freeway
Freeway...
C’mon....
